French producer Fonkynson's stylish mix of house, disco, and funk will sound familiar to anyone who's heard the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, or Breakbot, but the Horny EP suggests he's got some fresh -- or as he puts it, "FRnSH" -- ideas of his own. On songs like "Wired"'s thumping filter-disco, he somehow makes this style even sleeker than his influences and many of his contemporaries, calling to mind Letherette's streamlined approach as the track builds from choppy samples to gliding synth leads. Meanwhile, he adds some of the crystalline '80s-inspired atmosphere popularized by the Drive soundtrack on "Monday Morning" and the blissed-out "FRnSH," reaffirming how French touch can incorporate just about any other style into its fashionable -- yet now strangely timeless -- sound. While it's a little more subdued than 2013's Thirsty EP, Horny still provides ample evidence that Fonkynson knows how to keep this kind of music relevant in the 2010s.
