Park Hye Jin's first EP for Ninja Tune sustains the momentum of her hotly tipped 2018 debut, delivering coolly detached variations on deep house and techno spiked with pangs of romantic confusion, irritation, and other prickly feelings. Opener "Like This" sets the tone with a soothing beat, gentle bells, and Park's flowing, Korean-language vocal repetitions. "Can You" and "No" both spin F-bombs into mantras, with the former including a simultaneous declaration of love and hate set to a thumping uptempo beat and grainy keys, and the latter building into a stern command to STFU over throbbing tunnel techno. The downtempo title track conveys further emotional uncertainty, embellished with bird-like whistles and wisps of echoing, pitch-shifted vocals. The airy, juke-like "How Come" and whooshing ambient techno track "Beautiful" lack lead vocals, but both create a similar sort of tension through juxtaposing industrious beats with delicate, atmospheric synth melodies. Going against the grain of both pop and club music, Park's songs are intuitive expressions rather than obvious floor-fillers.
