Compiler
Colin Brown has chosen 20 of
Jimmy Dorsey's recordings from 1939-1942 for this import disc. Some of
Dorsey's biggest hits, among them "Green Eyes," "Besame Mucho," and "Amapola," are included, but many others are missing, and featured instead are several instrumentals originally released as B-sides (such as "Dixieland Detour" and "Begone") and interesting performances, such as
Helen O'Connell's take on "You Made Me Love You," that count as rarities. Maybe the selection is simply a reflection of
Brown's personal taste, but
Dorsey fans are likely to find it frustrating, since it means the set is neither here nor there in terms of what is included and excluded. Nevertheless, in the absence of a comprehensive
Jimmy Dorsey CD compilation, it will give them some satisfaction. The CD booklet says that the CEDAR system of sonic cleansing has been employed, but the results still sound like they have been mastered off records.
