A group of brothers from the South,
the Wednesdays have nothing besides fraternity and geographical roots with the overhyped
Kings of Leon. Indie rock minimalists who are as likely to kick into a little rockabilly-tinged speed pop (the utterly terrific "I'm Paralyzed") or
Mekons-style art-damaged roots rock (the fractured
Bo Diddley vibe and spoken word vocals of "Lost Highway Rock N Roll") as anything else,
the Wednesdays invest their second album with both knowledge of and healthy punkish disdain for accepted rock & roll conventions. One of the last records recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios before it was sold and shuttered in early 2005,
Invisible Youth might not rank in the pantheon alongside
Aretha Franklin or
Duane Allman, but its mixture of authentic Southern rootiness and blasts of pure punk aggression like "Total Nightmare" is undeniably cool. ~ Stewart Mason
