Jazz World Colors by Maurice Gainen - Uhune

Maurice Gainen is a fine musician who plays flute, tenor, soprano, keyboards, and electronic percussion on his CD. He says in the brief liner notes that he created the music on this project for his own satisfaction with no commercial considerations. It is a pity that his own musical goals are often so unadventurous. Many of the selections feature Gainen sticking overly close to the easy listening melodies, particularly when he plays flute. Gainen does show off his abilities well on soprano during "The Gospel to End All Gospels" and "No Trane, No Gain," but many of the other numbers are pleasant throwaways that only work well as background music. Although the end results are heartfelt and sincere, it is obvious that Maurice Gainen is capable of much more.
