The title of the debut record from Sweden's
Jivaro (Henrik Dahl) is reminiscent of
Primal Scream's
Screamadelica, but don't expect it to be a breakthrough in electronic dance. And while his band,
the Sleeping Flies, gets some heavy inspiration from
Primal Scream, this member of the Ultra Wide Band collective has only a dash of that flavor in his solo work.
Jivaro instead finds his roots in electro, Detroit techno, and dub. His alliance of these elements produces a calming ambience speckled with high-end cascading tones and robotic rhythms. Much of this is just as suitable for the bedroom as it is the dancefloor, even with its cold beats and breaks. Originally,
Jivarodelia was to include a sample of a
Spiritualized song, though it was denied use and removed before the album's release (a problem ironically encountered by
Spiritualized as well). Either way, the album is a pleasurable melting pot of electronic noises. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
