John Harmon is a fine if obscure straight-ahead pianist whose roots are in swing.
An Evening With the John Harmon Trio suffers from some faulty packaging, for although there are liner notes that discuss the origins of many of the songs, there is no mention anywhere who the bassist and drummer are in the trio. In addition,
Clifford Brown's "Sandu" is listed as "Sandoo" as if it were a recent original.
Harmon's playing is fine even if it lacks any real surprises, and he swings well on a set of familiar material plus his original "Little Winged One." Among the better selections are "Night and Day," "The Touch of Your Lips," "My Foolish Heart," and "Sandu." ~ Scott Yanow
