Kimball Collins followed his biggest selling trance compilations with 2001's Music Is Life, an uncomfortable 74-minute mix that pulled back the reins of trance even as it swerved itself off course. The overseas tastemakers had convinced many on the merits of progressive house and Collins seemed all too eager to keep up with the changing climate, relying on the broody templates of Ron Houder's "Outskirts" and Collins and Gyrate's title track to insert a vague concept of quality into a flat set list that was closer to hollow headphone dance music than anything of real thrill. ~ Dean Carlson
