Listening to the distinctive acidic squall of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer on Syntheme’s LASERS ‘N’ SHIT, one can easily mistake the effort for the late ‘80s jack house and acid tracks of Chicago DJs such as Phuture and Fast Eddie. The debut full-length of Brighton, England-based Louise Wood (Syntheme) is in full thrall of the numerous sonic possibilities of the diminutive silver knob box; from ethereal ambient electro to dark warehouse tracks to sample-fueled acid disco, Syntheme manages to tweak every subtle (and unsubtle) nuance from the machine into her squiggly, swinging electronic grooves.
