Much of the music of Orlande de Lassus is unknown to all but Lassus scholars, but even among those over two thousand works the music on this disc can be seen as particularly obscure. Until Wolfgang Boettcher put these works together by comparing partbooks kept in libraries across Europe, these motets, chansons, and madrigals were all but lost. This 1980 Teldec recording by Wolfgang Helbich and the Alsfelder Vokalensemble is lush, lively, and full of felicities. Their intonation is true, their tone is warm, their tempos are alert, and -- even with texts in four languages -- their pronunciation is only ever so slightly echt Deutsche. Teldec's sound is rich and deep.
