The Wynton Marsalis Septet is featured live in concert on this European import. Although the release might be a bootleg (since Marsalis has long been signed to Columbia), the music is well recorded and frequently exciting, with the only real fault being the extreme brevity; the CD has only 31½ minutes of music. Performed after Citi Movement was recorded, the great trumpeter performs his spirited "The Legend of Buddy Bolden" (much of which is taken unaccompanied), "Swingdown, Swingtown," "Highrise Riff" (the latter two also have solo space for altoist Wes Anderson, Walter Blanding on tenor and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon), and "Cherokee," which has an outstanding trumpet solo. The quantity of the music is low but the quality is quite high throughout this surprising disc, which is well worth searching for.
