Pollyanna's debut album was a blast of indie power pop in much the same vein as Sugar or fellow Australians Something For Kate. Long Player was an alternative hit in Australia, and several of its tracks became radio staples. Long Player contained some genuinely memorable songs (in particular the sweet pop of "Lemonsuck" and the gritty "Potomac"), but lacked a standout track like "Pale Grey Eyes," from their earlier Junior EP.
While Pollyanna's music-writing remained strong (even if lacking somewhat in variation), guitarist/vocalist Matt Handley's lyrics were, on the whole, lightweight. In addition, Long Player showed that Pollyanna were at their best when Handley prevented his vocals from drifting into the pointless screaming that marred several tracks. Overall, Long Player was a solid, if unexceptional, debut from Pollyanna, and showed considerable promise for their future.
