This 1987 compilation was among the earlier
Paul Mauriat releases on CD, and is a decent sampler of his work, containing not only the title tune but his covers of such familiar '60s fare as "Somethin' Stupid," "Lara's Theme," "Un Homme et Une Femme," "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)," and "This Is My Song," all of which were very sensible repertory for this artist --
Mauriat even adds some elegant flourishes to "Un Homme et Une Femme," and his orchestra's violin section carries the melody of "San Francisco" more sweetly than
Scott McKenzie's voice ever did. The '70s material is a little less beguiling, if only because "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" are heard too often as instrumentals, though the former also has some interesting underscoring for harp; and whether "Ebony And Ivory" deserves to be covered (even by
Paul McCartney himself) is still, at best, an open question. As for "Love Is Blue," it sounds even on this early CD as though it were conceived with digital audio's high resolution in mind. There have been better, much more comprehensive
Mauriat collections released since
Love Is Blue, but this is still a handy little disc. ~ Bruce Eder
