In 2000, Philippine singer
Marco Sison released
Maghihintay Na Lamang (I Will Wait), his second album for the independent Viva Records label.
Sison's previous Viva album, 1999's
Memories, consisted entirely of slow, easy listening love songs, a style of music that is
Sison's forte. Another of his albums, 1991's The Best of Marco Sison, released by Universal Records, also consists entirely of this type of material. However,
Maghihintay Na Lamang (I Will Wait) differs markedly from these earlier albums, with five of its 12 songs presented in a more upbeat style. Of the remaining seven numbers, two are remakes of international hits (
Gloria Estefan's "Words Get in the Way" and
Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet") and five are easy listening love songs similar to the type
Sison sang on his earlier releases. From the beginning of
Maghihintay Na Lamang, listeners will know this album is different. The opening "Magmula Noon" (Ever Since) starts with a funky guitar line and continues in a smooth, upbeat manner. So used to crooning easy listening material,
Sison seems to take the same approach with this song as well, albeit in an upbeat mode. "Tayo Na" (Let's Go) is a spirited, Latin-styled number on which the singer sounds relaxed and comfortable. He also seems comfortable on the upbeat "I Think I'll Tell Her." However, his
Stevie Wonder cover is an interpretation that lacks excitement. On the five easy listening love songs,
Marco can croon to his heart's content. ~ David Gonzales
