An entry in Recall Records' Magic Seasons series which features covers by successful photographers (this one has a print by
David Hamilton),
Magic Summer drifts by in a druggy, narcotic haze. This isn't California surf music, after all, with sunny harmonies and odes to bright summer days, but is instead a moody compilation of dreamy electro-pop and folk that suggests fog more than sunrays. Among the highlights are
Tommy Hools' "Lovin' Arms," which sticks out here simply because it is actually kind of funky,
the Bang Gang's ethereal, floating "It's Allright," and the poster child track for all of this,
Mazzy Star's "Fade into You." This is a night album. It fades away into whispers when the sun comes up in the morning.
