If they start to work on improvisations -- searching to create samples to repeat again and again -- and choose uncommon instruments for pop music, the French duo Mars ends up with short peculiar pieces that have the structure of pop songs. This final impression also comes from the fact the duo invites singers to give their voice and lyrics to the project. They invite three people, among them two girls -- Christine Plucinski and Karina -- whose way of singing sometimes is reminiscent of the Ex's singer and drummer, Katrin Bornfeld, and Steve Lewis, a therapist, writer, and musician (percussionist singer) who had already been involved with Rami (in the project Playing Building, for example). Mars' works, centering around percussion and loops, can make one think of Tom Waits' pieces, but also because of their saxophone and the dense atmosphere can make one think of John Lurie's music.
