Electronic trio
WWWINGS formed in 2015 and began releasing a series of bracing, volatile EPs that blended elements of grime, industrial, trap, and numerous other styles, expressing the grim reality of living in post-Soviet nations. The collective's first physical release was a brief 7" EP titled
Meta, issued by Canadian label Infinite Machine. Compared to their full-length debut Phoenixxx, these four songs are generally more club-focused, but for the type of club in which the apocalyptic sounds of
M.E.S.H. and
Rabit get the crowds moving. The daring sound design is still present, but there aren't as many explosions or other jarring noises, and the rhythms are given more room to breathe here. Still, the beats on "Glacial" and "Affliction" pummel viciously, and the grime-leaning "Gravity" (complete with a brief
Dizzee Rascal sample) features plenty of breaking glass and haunted voices along with its gargantuan bass. The release is barely ten-minutes long, but every second is deadly and suspenseful. ~ Paul Simpson
