After a string of eight albums on her own Bad Dog Records label, songwriter/songstress
Jonatha Brooke partnered with PledgeMusic and BFD, a Sony-affiliated label, for
Midnight. Hallelujah. It's a return to stand-alone original material after a companion LP to her own musical play (
My Mother Has 4 Noses) and an album of tunes set to the lyrics of
Woody Guthrie (
The Works). The record takes on types of beliefs and devotion not necessarily religious, as evidenced in titles like "Nothing Hurts Like Love Hurts" and "Put the Gun Down," a song that begs for cooler heads. It's a passionate set with bluesy electric guitar almost as prevalent as acoustic guitar and keys. ~ Marcy Donelson
