Album titles can be misleading. Although keyboardist
Scott Wilkie called last year's Narada Jazz debut
Boundless, he seemed to limit himself to tunes he knew radio would jump on and seemed a slave to dated synth sounds. His brilliant melodic sense and playful improvisations managed to shine through on that effort nonetheless. They're even stronger on
More Than You Know because he lets himself stretch and uses less synth. The one thing that hasn't changed is the overall joyous nature of
Wilkie's style; tunes like the title track offer a bouncy melody over a thick throbbing bass groove. His tunes continue to feature instantly catchy melodies, but a deeper palette emerges too. "In Comes the Ausgang" begins with a boogie-woogie vamp, digs into a snappy jam, then enters a new agey zone before guitarist Matthew Van Doran takes a crisp electric solo. Overall, the sonic variety fortifies
Wilkie's already strong appeal. ~ Jonathan Widran
