"Mower" is a fine example of what made
Superchunk one of the most enjoyable indie rock outfits of the 1990s. Taken from the 1993 full-length album
On the Mouth, the song plows along at mid-tempo, while lead singer Mac MacCaughan belts out the lyrics with a mixture of frustration and confused anger. By song's end, the pace has picked up quite a bit, and a blistering guitar solo plays over the driving rhythm section. "On the Mouth," the next track on the EP, is played at breakneck speed throughout, a brief but brilliant piece of tightly wound pop. A live version of "Fishing," recorded at the University of London, concludes the record in a wash of feedback, frantic drumming, and MacCaughan's advice to the crowd to "Have another beer and take the tube." A very solid EP. ~ Brandon Gentry
