Leeds-based duo
Guttersnipe produce an utterly terrifying brand of noise rock that explodes with pure force and never backs down. Uroceras Gigas plays jagged, splayed guitar riffs and Tipula Confusa bashes out contorted, manic drum rhythms. Both shriek their brains out and activate various forms of oscillating synths. The two musicians have a remarkable, almost supernatural sense of chemistry. While their thrashing, shredding, and wailing will likely sound like aimless cacophony to most people, it's obvious how focused they are once you really listen. The rhythms wind up, combust, and run circles around the remains all at once. The guitars and electronics seem to clash against the drums, but at the same time they're equally important in shaping the momentum of the songs. On top of all of this, Gigas' unhinged caterwauling is the sound of pure, abject horror. The two musicians have spent time involved in numerous music scenes (metal, punk, techno, shoegaze). However, it's clear that they've never felt truly at home in any of them, and that
Guttersnipe is the truest expression of their talents and impulses. There are certainly traceable elements of those genres, particularly the grindcore drumming of "Stromatolite's Kiss" and the black metal riffage of the epic "God's Will to Gain Access," but the duo's energy and style are all their own. Even if one is familiar with the catalogs of labels like Load and Skin Graft, it's hard to mistake
Guttersnipe for anyone else.
My Mother the Vent is an absolutely monstrous debut. ~ Paul Simpson
