There's no shortage of holiday albums released each and every winter, and many of those releases are targeted at specific niches. As you might presume, Navidad en Merengue indeed targets the merengue audience. Most of the songs are non-traditional holiday fare -- for example, you won't find "White Christmas" and "Frosty the Snowman" here. Instead, you'll find some merengue-centric songs written by non-American composers. Furthermore, none of the performers are particularly well-known, bringing even more of a foreign element to this particular album. So even if somehow merengue music doesn't correlate too well with most people's ideas of traditional Christmas motifs -- snow, Santa, stockings, fireplaces, scarves, mittens -- it's not to say that the style doesn't have some impressive holiday music to offer. It may be idiosyncratic to many, but it's still interesting at the least and refreshingly warm and sunny at the best.
