Talk about inevitable! How could it have taken someone this long to come up with the idea of taking "Nessun Dorma," the tenor aria by Italian Giacomo Puccini, from Turandot, his faux-oriental opera set in Imperial China, and making a single, CD-length track out of it, featuring the didgeridoo? To be fair, the didgeridoo doesn't actually play the melody ("Gari Wunang" in the Aboriginal language of David Hudson, the producer and didgeridoo virtuoso) -- it's sung by vocalist Megan Shorey, and she doesn't sound bad at all -- but it plays a very prominent role in setting the tone. Hudson is accompanied by a rock ensemble that puts the tune through a variety of paces -- primarily with a soft rock beat, but with forays into techno and beatless new age. Hudson gets an amazing array of articulations and timbres from his instrument; after hearing this CD, you'll never think of the didgeridoo as a drone instrument again.
