As the Chicago footwork scene has expanded globally, its sound has grown from frenetic sample-dicing and booming bass to incorporating grander production values and influences from genres such a drum'n'bass and dubstep. Chicago footwork innovator DJ Spinn's first EP for Hyperdub is appropriately big and brazen, with opener "Throw It Back" (co-produced by Chicago's Taso and Bay Area dubstep producer Mimosa) having a much more festival-ready feel than any of Spinn's previous recordings, with choppy trap-like drums and pitched-down rap vocals. "The Future Is Now" is more stripped-down, with acid techno synth lines weaving around shuddering, clicking beats. By far the EP's highlight is "Dubby," a DJ Rashad co-production featuring Detroit MC Danny Brown. The exhilarating track melds chopped-up jungle breakbeats with Brown's staccato vocals and a sneaky jazz-funk guitar sample, ending up feeling like a culmination of everything the Teklife crew has achieved thus far.
