East of Georgia on the shores of the Caspian, Russian Dagestan is a particularly fascinating melting-pot. By religion it is mostly Muslim; but on the evidence of this group at least, its music is less Middle-Eastern than is, say, Greek. This is a delicious recording: two female lead singers backed by accordion, reeds and percussion. The singing and accordion have obvious Slavic influences, the rhythms bridge the Balkans and Turkic traditions. (66:43) ~ John Storm Roberts
