If one believes that
Robert Pollard was the primary source of influence for
Stephen Brodsky on
Expose Your Overdubs, then
the Beatles (combined with the aforementioned
Robert Pollard influence) are definitely the source of inspiration for
Ole Sunday. While longer in length than his debut, the same pop approach can be found at the root of the music.
Brodsky utilizes simple pop structure and melodies reminiscent of the
Fab Four to deliver his tunes. The acoustic guitar and piano are a far cry from the abrasive electric guitar sound the singer is known for with his work in
Cave-In, but they are effectively played. While on the whole the album seems lacking much excitement, it's not entirely boring, either. The songs are catchy and
Brodsky's vocals are nice to listen to, and while it's a little more cohesive than his debut, it's lacking that extra dynamic needed to make it really tantalizing. ~ Kurt Morris
