Rev-Ola's second compilation of rarities from the vaults of White Whale contains 25 overlooked tracks worthy of investigation. Nothing much happened for most of the artists who recorded for the label during its six-year existence, with the exception of
the Turtles, White Whale's only cash crop, and
Dobie Gray, who would go on to greater fame via his giant 1974 hit "Drift Away." It's a given that sunshine pop collectors will want these obscure tracks, but casual listeners should also check out this compilation, at the very least for
the Clique's "Superman," which
R.E.M. covered on
Lifes Rich Pageant, and the ultra-rare single "Christmas Is My Time of Year" by the Christmas Spirit, featuring members of
the Turtles and
Linda Ronstadt. ~ Al Campbell
