Where the
Enforcement record stressed the hypnotizing qualities over the dancefloor friendliness, this second
Basic Channel record applies the same formula to pounding bass beats, resulting in three variations on a potent style of minimal techno. There are essentially four elements to this record that loop in a distorted, fractured manner with relentlessness: the underlying low-frequency pounding of compressed bass beats, the barely noticeable yet inescapable rhythm of syncopated high-hat percussion, the non-linear flow of a mid-range-frequency riff, and the modulating distortion of alien high-frequency sound streams. While this formula may sound obvious, its application is pure genius. Rather than merely set the loops and slowly fade them in and out of one another,
Basic Channel forever tweaks the sounds, leaving only the high-hat percussion as a constant. Even when the high-frequency riffs and sound streams aren't appearing and disappearing, they are twisting, modulating, oscillating, altering, mutating, and doing whatever else imaginable.
