101 Strings have a popular reputation for producing soporific pap, but there was a surprising amount of variety to be found on their albums.
Plus Guitars, for example, is a perfectly respectable and enjoyable instrumental guitar album with immaculate playing and interesting arrangements. The generic nature of the
101 Strings franchise (who are these mystery musicians?) makes their albums hard to take seriously, but followers of instrumental guitar greats such as
George Barnes and
Chet Atkins should give this one an open-minded listen. It might not set the music world on its ear, but, for a budget price,
Plus Guitars is perfectly fine.
