Prestige Profiles, Vol. 7 collects tracks guitarist
Kenny Burrell recorded for Prestige from the late '50s to the early '60s. It was during this time, just after
Burrell had moved to New York City from Detroit, that the young melodist built his reputation as one of the most sophisticated and gifted guitarists of his generation. Included are such tracks as the softly funky "Montono Blues" off 1962's Bluesy Burrell, the jauntily modernist "I Never Knew" featuring saxophonist
John Coltrane and the cool "Minor Mishap" off 1957's "The Cats" with fellow Detroiter pianist
Tommy Flanagan. This is a solid introduction to
Burrell's early work. [Also included is a bonus disc featuring work by other Prestige guitarists including
Pat Martino,
Tal Farlow and others.] ~ Matt Collar
