Released on the heels of the reissue of Extempore's classic '70s recording Milá Ctyr Viselcu, Pseudemokritos once again showed how much bleaker saxophonist Mikolás Chadima's world was compared to co-bandleader J.J. Neduha's. Billed as a trio album, this CD is nonetheless Chadima's project. He wrote all the music and performs most of it, including vocals, guitar, and synthesizer. Guitarist/keyboardist Peter Binder contributed arrangements and managed to put his stamp on the sessions, mainly through his crying guitar solos (similar to Jeff Beck's work on Roger Waters' Amused to Death). Bassist Ales Charvát is nothing more than a presence, although his fat lines do emphasize the heavy, dark atmospheres. Daniel Charvát plays drums on a couple of tracks -- everything else is programmed drums, but the resulting cold sound meshes in perfectly with the music. All lyrics (mainly Ivan Wernich's) describe post-war scenes and stories. The opening title track sets the mood with a short text worth quoting entirely: "When at the beginning of the world/Limbs met/They connected at random/Just like that/Just out of boredom/People were made/Bastards." Chadima's extinguished tone of voice seems to enhance the fact that there is no hope for better days. Similarities in mood and style to Pink Floyd's The Wall and the complete work of the Belgian avant-prog outfit Present are very strong. As depressing as it is, this music is beautiful and remains both challenging and simple -- a trademark for Chadima in the '90s. ~ François Couture
