It had to happen eventually. Just as the original wave of new wave and synth pop acts were eventually supplanted on the college radio airwaves by a generation of self-consciously epic-sounding bands like U2, Simple Minds, the Waterboys, and their ilk, Behind the Scenes follow the current crop of new wave revival groups with their own updating of mid-'80s "big music." This German trio is unafraid to play to the rafters, with booming Steve Lillywhite-style production heavy on the gated reverb and the thundering keyboards. Mono-named singer Melrow works almost exclusively in the baritone of doomy portent familiar to anyone who remembers the Cult's Ian Astbury and the Sisters of Mercy's Andrew Eldritch, and his lyrics tend to sound vaguely Important without actually seeming to mean very much. Those who look fondly back on their moody, mascara-and-teased-hair days in the school drama department will immediately latch onto Pure, but it's hard to imagine anyone else being particularly impressed with it.
