Queens of the Blues is an 18-track collection documenting an eclectic mix of recordings from the '20s through the '80s. While there is no question that these performances are top-notch, calling this "blues" is a misnomer and a bit of a stretch. Most listeners would agree that half of these artists certifiably fit the bill of traditionally recognized "Queens of the Blues" like
Memphis Minnie,
Koko Taylor, and
Big Mama Thornton. However, Betty Everette,
Odetta, and
Fontella Bass certainly aren't the first names to spring to mind when truly applying that moniker; these women are associated more with folk or pop-soul. Continuity-niggling aside, this mid-priced compilation from Fuel 2000 delivers some great music nevertheless and that's what counts. ~ Al Campbell
