Hot Since 82’s new album, Recovery, is a complex catalogue of intricately produced dance and electronic tracks. This is the third LP from the Leeds-born DJ/Producer, and arguably his most poignant with past works lacking the emotional coherence that this new record encapsulates so beautifully. Nightfall kicks us off with a smooth, melancholic dance track with Temple on vocals. This relatively simple track excels in its expression of raw wistful emotion. The various drones lingering in the soundscapes add to the sombre ensemble. Listen out for the beautiful vocal motif that arises roughly halfway through the track. This delightful melody coupled with a gradually low passing synth pad makes for ethereal listening. Body Control is an old school 90s house track featuring a spoken word performance by Boy George. Evocative and provocative lyrics exploring sexuality and sensuality accompany the danceable and mesmerizingly repetitive groove. The opening funky palm muted guitar on Sinnerman instantly puts a smile on your face. This buttery smooth song features a deep instrumental and fantastic vocal performance from Ed Graves with a catchy chorus ‘Sinnerman, Sinnerman, Sinnerman, you’re breaking down’. All in all, Recovery is a diverse LP offering a broad spectrum of sounds. From classic house to funk grooves and deep house, this record has it all. The precise and immaculate production coupled with the solid vocal performances make for a very pleasant listening experience. Definitely one to check out! © Tom Oscar Adams/Qobuz
