Eminem ging kort na het aflopen van het succes van Encore vrijwillig in ballingschap. Die afzondering zou oorspronkelijk dienen als een rustpauze van zijn creatieve werk, maar werd al gauw een duistere periode. Em verwijst weinig subtiel naar zijn verslaving met de titel van Relapse, zijn eerste album in vijf jaar. Relapse dient om de aandacht te trekken, om als bewijs te dienen dat Eminem een muzikale grootheid en een provoceerder blijft. Zijn woordenstroom is zo vlot, zijn woordspelingen zo scherp, dat het misschien grof lijkt om te wensen dat hij het over iets anders zou hebben dan zijn eeuwige obsessies en demonen, maar op Relapse gaat het niet echt om hetgeen Eminem zegt, het gaat om de manier waarop bij het zegt. Hij is vol muzikale energie uit zijn ballingschap teruggekomen.
