By the time of 2007's five-track
Remixes album, it was still unclear if
the Rakes would be able to follow through with the success of their earliest singles and their well-received debut
Capture/Release. Still, this EP did provide something for fans to sink their teeth into while waiting for their sophomore release. With its sophisticated, new wave-influenced electronica treatments,
Remixes also adds an intriguing dimension to the band's '80s-flavored post-punk sound. The results make
the Rakes sound even more like
Combat Rock-era
Clash, but that's not a bad thing; rather, it adds a bit more bounce and dance to their guitar-driven ethos. ~ Anthony Tognazzini
