Several months after His Name Is Alive released Return to Never, a second LP of Warren Defever's teenage ambient experiments, the Detroit visionary issued Return Versions, a mixtape of beat-driven reconstructions of the same material. With help from producer/DJ Walking Trails, Defever turns his shimmering guitarscapes into tripped-out head-nodders that bring to mind Adrian Sherwood's industrial dub productions from the 1980s as well as the '90s New York illbient sound. The drums really end up being the star of the show, as the original tracks mainly consist of gossamer ambience set through a slow flanger, but the elements combine to create something more otherworldly than they would be on their own. There are moments when the sonics expand and outshine the booming drums, like on "Early 2 Version," but mostly it's just a swirling glow and thumping, knocking beats, and that's all it needs to establish a tranquil yet amped-up mood. The shoegaze-without-overdriven-fuzz of "To Remember Version" and the psychedelic rush of "Chords Version" are two of the more energized highlights, while "Last Thing Thought Of Version" is a gentle, soothing dub drift.
