British DJ/producer
Justin Robertson has seen quite a few dance revivals during his decade and a half on the decks. Accordingly,
Revtone, his first solo album (after two recorded as
Lionrock), is understandably a record for the ages, trading on the sounds and styles of a handful of classic periods he's been spinning through. And as befits a release on Nuphonic (quickly becoming the Rhino of dance/electronica labels),
Robertson comes correct with the genre-spanning stride of
Larry Levan and the spry, synthetic basslines of classic '80s dance records. Instead of the breezy spy music and noir soundtracks of his
Lionrock material,
Revtone plays up
Robertson the DJ, less concerned with crossover pop than a smooth musical journey. ~ John Bush
