Rex Allen, occasionally listed under the title Collector's Edition, consists of a dozen radio transcriptions from the '40s, although they are not identified as such. A few of these recordings have appeared on other collections of
Allen's transcriptions, such as Jasmine Records' Riding All Day and Soundies' The Last of the Great Singing Cowboys, but the sound quality on this CD is superior, with greater definition and presence. The downside is its brevity, since this package offers half as much material as those other titles, although there is not enough overlap between the three to discourage serious fans from buying them all. The program consists of Western standards, and the liner notes are surprisingly lengthy for a budget-line release. ~ Greg Adams
