With lyrics in Persian and music that ranges from torch song to flamenco,
Faramarz Aslani's album, Days of Song and Sorrow is a strange mix. Drawing inspiration from great Persian poets like Attar, his songs deal with carnal and spiritual love, and his often passionate singing is a good match for the subject matter. It is primarily an album of solo guitar and vocals with occasional support from a small crew of international musicians. While the album is not a masterpiece, there is an interesting fusion of cultures here and
Aslani does a good job of presenting music that both honors his native Iran and allows space for the inclusion of new ideas. ~ Stacia Proefrock
