The Blake Babies called it a day with the five-track
Rosy Jack World EP, a strong summation of their brief but compelling career. Originals like
Juliana Hatfield's "Take Me" and
John Strohm's "Downtime" are indicative of the group's impressive growth as songwriters, while the two covers -- off-kilter stabs at the
Grass Roots' "Temptation Eyes" and
Dinosaur Jr.'s "Severed Lips" -- visit the opposite ends of their spectrum of influences.
Rosy Jack World also contains
Hatfield's prescient celebration of her favorite band, "Nirvana," recorded many months before the Seattle trio broke out of the underground and changed the alt-rock world forever. ~ Jason Ankeny
