Well, maybe the Lindsays String Quartet is as good as English critics say it is. Maybe it does have a supple ensemble and a burnished tone and a sympathetic interpretation. Maybe it does have a good heart and a clear mind and a deep soul. Maybe it's only the rare cranky American critic who can find fault with the quartet's playing, interpretation, and soul.
But if the group is as good as English critics say, it sure isn't obvious from this mediocre set of the late chamber music of Schubert. The supple ensemble sounds sloppy in the transitions between phrases and sections. The burnished tone sounds gilded in the slow movements and garish in the fast movements. The sympathetic interpretations seem brusque in the minor-keyed works and brash in the major-keyed works. And while no critic could presume to speak with any authority on the state of the musicians' hearts and minds and souls, any critic could question whether it is their hearts or their hubris, their minds or their mawkishness, their souls or their sentimentality that are on exhibition in these recordings of some of the most soulful chamber music ever composed. Sanctuary's remastering of ASV's digital originals is warmer and closer than the originals.
