Ranee Lee is a talented jazz singer, but just in average form on this set. Her renditions of such warhorses as "Old Folks," "My One and Only Love," "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "Everything Must Change" do not make one forget the definitive versions, and the lesser-known material (which includes two
Lee originals) is not overly memorable. Most interesting is a version of "'Tis Autumn" that has the rhythm section playing a furious doubletime while the singer sounds quite relaxed at a slower tempo.
Lee is joined by pianist Tilden Webb, guitarist
Richard Ring, bassist
John Clayton, drummer
Jeff Hamilton and (on three numbers) a very restrained
David Murray on tenor. ~ Scott Yanow
