In 2000, Philippine independent label Viva Records released
Servant of All, a religious-themed album featuring singers signed to the label, as well as film personalities and religious figures who provide spoken passages and words of inspiration. The spoken religious passages include both Bible scripture and original writings, and are heard between each song. Many of the songs were composed by Filipino priests.
Servant of All's concept is built around a prayer hour, allowing a person to reflect and worship while listening to the album. The album opens with a reverant introduction from film star
Eddie Mercado, which leads to "Jubilee," sung by
Donna Cruz. (A video of "Jubilee" is shown at the start and close of daily broadcasting of Viva TV, a sister company of Viva Records.) The traditional "Amazing Grace" is performed in a jazz-inflected and soulful manner by
Lani Misalucha. In addition to the religious songs,
Servant of All includes two well-known pop songs that can be interpreted in a religious manner. These are the Carpenters' "I Won't Last a Day Without You," sung here by the Wiseguys in an exciting soulful manner, and
Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken," sung by
Zsa Zsa Padilla. Religious music doesn't command a large market in the Philippines, but
Servant of All reached double platininum (80,000 units) in sales. The album is well-conceived and performed.
