Billed as “new movements in Australian jazz and soul,” this bright and lively compilation from Melbourne record store Plug Seven and label Wondercore Island showcases the many directions being pursued by Australia’s groove-oriented talent. There are cosmic-tinged jazz voyages from WVR BVBY and veteran pianist Barney McAll (with robust vocals from Rita Satch), and equally thrilling jazz throwbacks from The Rookies and the all-trombone James Macaulay Quartet. On the vocal tip, Jazz Party fully inhabits sultry analog R&B, while Daniel Merriweather is lyrically defiant over light, stripped-back funk. Recorded mostly at Plug Seven’s own studio with contributions from Hiatus Kaiyote’s rhythm section, Seven Wonders highlights genre-blending modern collaboration at its best.
