Shine is Joni Mitchells eerste album van nieuw materiaal in negen jaar. Op het album gaat ze voor een intieme aanpak, en neemt ze veel van de instrumentale verantwoordelijkheid voor zich. Het is dan ook de onconventionele aanpak van de akoestische en elektronische instrumenten die dit album zijn singuliere charme geeft; ongehoorde organische synthesizersteken en vlugge elektronische percussie schuren tegen vreemd gestemde gitaren en iele piano lijntjes aan. Tekstueel versmelt Mitchell poëtische beelden met sociaalpolitieke thema’s veel naadlozer dan ze in tijden heeft gedaan. Ze doet zelfs een van haar eerste nummers opnieuw aan in deze modus met een opgewekte versie van “Big Yellow Taxi.” Luisterend naar het niveau van overduidelijke artistieke urgentie op Shine, is het moeilijk om te geloven dat Mitchell ooit zou hebben geloofd dat ze niks meer te melden heeft.
