SIEMPRE SELENA combines remixes of recordings Selena made as a teen-ager with a couple of later, previously-unreleased tracks. Like DREAMING OF YOU, the 1995 album that documented her final English-language recording sessions and added some concurrent Latin hits, SIEMPRE SELENA shows that Selena's music was successfully multifaceted, even at that tender age.
Selena's major gift to Tejano music, that South Texas blend of Tex-Mex and accordion-rich German polka, was to infuse it with a radio-friendly, pop ambience. Even on these early sides, there is pure romanticism, as well as songs dense with emotion, or rich with smooth, sophisticated sensuality, and now and then a spirited funkiness. As always, the clarity of Selena's voice shines through, along with exuberance and sincerity. The tracks range from classic Tejano ("Cien Anos"), to pure English-language love songs ("Only Love"), to feisty, danceable pop ("Ya No").
