David Sills' work on Bigs is quite reminiscent of Stan Getz and Wayne Marsh, but at the same time he manages to create a warm, breathy sax tone that is all his own. It's quite hard to make a good jazz record that isn't derivative, but if you love jazz and you have to make records, then it's best to emulate the great stuff that came before, and that's exactly what David Sills has done with his record Bigs. David Sills has chosen to use a quintet on this release, which features guitar, bass, drums, and some fine piano, compliments of Alan Broadbent. The interplay between Larry Koonse's guitar and David Sills' sax is something that really sticks out and almost becomes the highlight feature of this recording. This is a strong recording, and while it's quite derivative, fans of Stan Getz and Wayne Marsh will certainly find an enjoyable disc in Bigs.
