With so many (maybe even too many) recordings of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons available on the market, it is certainly difficult to produce new recordings that merit attention and offer listeners something notably different than recordings already made. This recording, made by the Orquestra de Cambra de Vila-Seca, definitely offers listeners something different, but not in a good way. According to the liner notes, the orchestra is made up of teachers and their conservatory students. Being a youth orchestra, however, cannot be an excuse for poor playing if performances are to be recorded and marketed. The performance of The Four Seasons is, quite simply, ghastly. Intonation is all over the map, articulation does not match, entrances are not together, balance is not adjusted, and sound quality is thin and unpleasant. Making matters worse is that soloist and orchestra director Evelio Tieles' playing is just as out of tune and unrefined as the orchestra. Listeners are advised to steer well clear of this very poor recording.
