Slam Stewart is best known for his singing in octave unison with his bass (whether arco or pizzicato), particularly for his recordings with
Slim Gaillard or with
the Art Tatum Trio. But he led a fair number of dates of his own, two of which are compiled on this CD reissue. The bulk of the performances come from a session with
Wild Bill Davis (heard on piano instead of his usual organ), guitarist
Al Casey, and drummer Joe Marshall. The balance is from a trio with little-known pianist
Gene Rodgers and drummer
Jo Jones. In addition to the familiar songs like "On Green Dolphin Street," "All the Things You Are," and "Willow Weep for Me,"
Stewart offers a few originals, though none of his three works is particularly remarkable. Frankly, the bassist's gimmick wears a bit thin after a few tracks. The music swings, but it has to be heard in rather small doses to be enjoyed. ~ Ken Dryden
